If you intend to pursue criminal prosecution, the first and most important step is to report the crime to your local police department. Simply call your local police station and say that you would like to report a crime. Usually a police officer will be sent out in take down your report, but some cases don’t require this service.

In most states the police have special units that will respond to sexual crimes. If you feel more comfortable with male or female police officers you should ask to deal with this type of officer and it can usually be arranged. The police you speak to will either come to your home or arrange for a time for you to come in and give your report. It is perfectly okay to bring a neighbor or friend along as a support person.

Usually during the process of taking down a person’s statement, police officers will want as detailed information as possible surrounding the conversations or acts involved in the incident in question. Because many incidents that are reported to the police are traumatic events, it is not uncommon for survivors to have difficulty remembering places and times, especially if the crimes took place over a long period of time.

It is with great hope that you never have to experience the disappearance of someone you love. However, should you ever be faced with a missing persons coping is very important.

When someone disappears, everything changes, your entire life is turned upside down. As the survivor your emotions will vary greatly. You’ll feel sad, guilt, angry, depressed, hurt, hopeless, rage, apathy, and hysteria. You’ll feel them at different times and different places and you’ll not be able to control your emotions.

One very important contact that you should get hold of as quickly as possible is the missing person’s dentist. You can also provide the police with the dent’s name. The dentist is so important because the dental records are extremely helpful in identifying a person.

When filing a missing persons report you need to write down a detailed description of what the person looks like. This should include eye color, hair color, weight, height, and any distinguishing identifying marks such as scars or tattoos. It should also include whether the person has braces, wears eyeglasses, whether they suffer from acne, or anything else you can think of that would help to identify them.
